The Blackcomb quarterpipe is a bit of an enigma. Some years it doesn’t form at all, some years it shapes up too flat and not workable, and some years it’s perfect. 1994 was the perfect year, it was before snowparks took off and halfpipes were still small and hand dug, offering pretty limited options for going big. The quarterpipe was the place where progression was happening.
We spent a lot of time shaping this thing, and the feeling of flying at it going full speed is totally unique. Anyone who has ever done it knows instantly what I’m talking about. The leg-crushing Gs in the middle of the transition sent many, many people flying off the lip completely crushed.
KY was a master though. He was making a name for himself in the international contest scene by bringing power and style to the pipe, and this 20 foot transition was exactly what he needed to push the limits.
