In 2009 I wrote a book about the history of snowboarding in Western Canada. Funded by Westbeach, then celebrating its 30th anniversary, the book was a much broader look at the birth and growth of snowboarding on the west side of Canada. It’s long been out of print, but I recently found a box with some copies in my storage locker. So many people have asked where they can get their hands on Out West in the last decade. For now, you can get ahold of it here.

“And one thing many people don’t realize is that Dano is about as good with words as he is with photos. From the start—first as a rider and then as a photog—Dano has been deeply involved with snowboarding in Canada and it shows in the book. From interviews with Ken Achenbach and Matt Houghton in the opening section, to the legendary Westbeach Classic and party-hard-ride-harder image cultivated by Canadian shreds like Kearns, Johnson and the rest of the Whiskey crew, Out West relates an evolutionary tale of Canadian snowboarding writ large.”

-The Snowboarder’s Journal.

“Ever wonder where Trouble came from? How about Shorty's Snowboards? Ross Rebagliati? Why "The Resistance" and "True Life" had so many Whistler backcountry shots in them? How those crazy French-Canadians figure into things? … What role Canadians have played in shaping this great sport of ours? You'll find answers to these pressing questions in "Out West" and nowhere else. At 120 pages, it's a surprisingly complete historical document and one that pulls no punches.”
